After 14 years in aerospace, doing design/build engineering of equipment, facilities, and process for commercial aircraft assembly, Chris decided to apply his skills in a much more human-centered way. The combination of his Master’s degree in human factors (NYU, 2013) and his mechanical engineering degree (University of Washington, 1996) is a unique foundation for creating real-world solutions that integrate operational effectiveness and patient-centered care into facility design.
Industrial Designer, Fellow
Luca acquired a solid Industrial Design education during at Carleton University and Dawson College in Canada. Over ten years of international design experience working for multinational companies and award winning design consultancies, he has experience managing the full design process in industries such as consumer electronics, medical, sports, consumer products and toy design, with some work being patented.
Design Strategist, Fellow
Life trained Elyse to be an artist – to feel for people and express it in the most humanly way possible. School trained her to be a designer – to look at human needs and make something useful. With this combination, she hopes to put human value back into the things and businesses we make for each other. While many shy away from big, hairy projects, Elyse gravitates towards them, eager to get her hands dirty.
For Tom, what originally started as an interest in design has now become a mission to improve healthcare through architectural innovation. NXT benefits from his 30+ years of experience as a strategic planner and developer for the Spartanburg (S.C.) Regional Healthcare System. Tom earned his masters in healthcare administration at The George Washington University.
Named as one of 2010’s “20 Most Influential People” in healthcare, Debra has a lot to offer to NXT and our organization is much stronger because of it. She is the CEO of the Center for Health Design and serves on several advisory boards, such as the Healthier Hospitals Initiative and Arizona State University’s Healthcare Design Initiative.
David is a Professor of Architecture at Clemson University. He is also the Director of Graduate Studies in Architecture + Health, one of the most comprehensive masters degree programs that focus on healthcare architecture. He was selected in 2007 as one of “Twenty Making a Difference” nationally by Healthcare Design Magazine.
Andy oversees overall growth and service delivery as a Senior Vice President of Member Field Services for the Premier healthcare alliance. His team helps members find solutions to improve cost and quality. With more than 20 years of experience, Andy has a diverse background in sales, training and development, operations, process management, and customer service delivery working with Comcast Inc., medibuy.com and C.R. Bard Inc.
Thom served in the U.S. Army for 30 years, earning the title of Colonel while in the Medical Service Corps. He is now the president of TDK Consulting, which provides strategic thought leadership in health and infrastructure organizations. As the former Chief of Staff for the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, Thom oversaw all policy, personnel, and management activities for the Assistant Secretary’s office and the TRICARE Management Activity.
Gail is the Dean of the College of Nursing, a Distinguished University Professor, and a Professor in the College of Medicine in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). She has received many awards including the American Nurses Association Distinguished Contribution to Psychiatric Nursing Award and the Psychiatric Nurse of the Year Award from the American Psychiatric Nurses Association.
Debbie is a registered nurse, co-founder and president of the Nursing Institute for Healthcare Design and is also a clinical consultant. She has 26 years experience in nursing as a clinician, healthcare consultant and entrepreneur. She is also working on her doctorate of nursing practice, with a focus on innovation and leadership, from the University of Minnesota.
Andy is the director of health initiatives at Sanford Health, an integrated health system based in South Dakota. With tremendous growth over recent years, it is now the largest rural, not-for-profit health care system in the nation, and the system also includes operations in Ghana and China.
As a managing principal at McMillian Pazdan Smith Architects, Ron has more than 20 years of experience with a wide variety of architectural building types. Recognized as a successful “consensus builder”, Ron has been nominated for numerous awards and has earned certificates to enhance his architectural skills for the healthcare industry.
Walter is the Senior Vice President of Facilities at the Parkland Health & Hospital System in Dallas, Texas. He oversees more than 500 employees in the system’s Engineering, Planning, Design and Construction, Clinical Engineering, Environmental Services and Sustainability departments.
